Not too late to get a flu jab

EVEN though winter only has a few weeks left to run on the calendar, experts are saying it’s not too late to get a flu vaccination.

A spokesperson from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners said flu cases had the ability to tip the scales when it came to hospital services, and while case numbers had been down year-on-year, it could still get worse.

“Flu is not the only reason hospitals are under pressure, but when they are already operating at or near capacity, a sudden rise in preventable winter illness can tip them over the edge,” said RACGP president Dr Michael Wright.

“Sydney has shown how quickly the pressure can build.

“Flu seasons are unpredictable, and we should not assume this year’s lower numbers mean we are in the clear.

“Vaccination is one of the simplest steps you can take to protect yourself, your family and the people around you. If you haven’t received your flu vaccine yet, book with your GP.”

With flu spread not limited to winter, Dr Wright said now is a good time to get a vaccination if you hadn’t already.

“Vaccinating now could prevent a frightening illness for your child and help stop flu spreading through your family,” he said.
