STUDENTS at St. Joseph’s Primary School in Molong embraced the spirit of NAIDOC Week on Friday, 3 July with a vibrant celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
The celebrations began with an acknowledgement of country and a cleansing smoke ceremony performed by special guest, Luke Barnes and his son, Benji. The ceremony offered students, staff and parents the chance to rid themselves of bad spirits.
Following on from the ceremony, the school grounds were set up with students able to rotate between a range of hands-on cultural experiences, such as dot painting, weaving, Indigenous dance and other traditional activities.
The celebration was a wonderful opportunity for students to expand their understanding and appreciation of the rich history, culture and traditions of Australia’s First Nations peoples, while having fun.
