A HISTORICAL Canowindra building is being brought back to life with a new store offering affordable goods, coffee, a sense of community and volunteer opportunities.
The Cowra Community Enterprise, or CCE, is expanding its community-focused work into Canowindra, with local resident Jill Barrett preparing to open a new op-shop in the old Trading Post building on Ferguson Street.
The project aims to be more than just a place to find second-hand treasures, with organisers hoping it will become a welcoming space where people can meet, connect and support one another.
For Ms Barrett, the opportunity represents a chance to become more involved in the community she now calls home.
“I’ve moved out from Orange through necessity, and this has filled a gap for me,” she said.
“It’s an amazing town. Everyone here is so gorgeous. It’s just a real lovely country town.”
CCE CEO Karren Cave who is supporting the endeavor said the idea felt like the right fit for Canowindra.
“Within 24 hours I thought, this is meant to be,” Ms Cave said. “This will be so good for this town. It will bring a lot more people to the town, which any small-town needs at the moment.”
The new shop will offer donated clothing, furniture, household items and even some handmade creations by Ms Barrett. A coffee area where people can stop and chat will also be available.
Ms Cave said the project was about much more than shopping.
“It’s run by the community, supported by the community, community help in, and then when people come in, we’re supporting them,” she said.
“That’s the circle.”
The shop will officially open on Saturday, August 1 from 10am to 4pm, with a sausage sizzle.
Community members interested in volunteering are encouraged to visit the shop and speak with the team.
