AFTER a decade of bringing communities together and raising vital funds for mental health support, the organisers of the Cargo2Grenfell (C2G) Walk are calling on locals to help carry the event into its next chapter.
Current organisers, Danielle and Toby Barons have announced they are stepping back from coordinating the annual fundraiser after 10 years at the helm but are eager to see it continue.
The pair said the decision was “bittersweet”, with the C2G Walk becoming a significant part of their lives, and those who participated in it.
“The C2G Walk has been a huge part of our lives for the past decade, and it’s something we’ve poured out hearts into,” they said.
“While it’s sad to step away, we’re incredibly proud of what the community has built together. We feel it’s the right time to pass the baton to allow the event to continue to grow with fresh ideas and new energy.”
Since its inception, the walk has raised approximately $200,000 for The Head Strong Foundation, supporting mental health education and initiatives including Rural Remote Mental Health courses delivered across community groups.
The organisers said the event had become something much bigger than a fundraiser.
“It’s a weekend where people from across the region come together, reconnect, support one another and share a common purpose,” they said.
“Whether people walk the full distance, volunteer, sponsor the event or simply cheer everyone on, they’ve all become part of something bigger than themselves.”
Over the past decade, the organisers said one of their proudest achievements has been seeing people openly share their mental health experiences and build connections along the way.
“Some of the most memorable moments have been hearing people tell us that participating in the walk helped them through one of the toughest periods of their life, or that it gave them the confidence to speak openly about their mental health for the first time.”
The organisers said the decision to step away was not made lightly.
“Every chapter has its season, and we have to follow what feels right in our own life journey,” they said.
The pair will continue to support the transition, offering guidance, planning resources, contacts and mentoring to the next organising team.
They are seeking expressions of interest from community groups, service clubs, sporting organisations or individuals who share a passion for supporting their community.
“Previous event experience is certainly helpful, but not essential,” they said.
“Enthusiasm, commitment, teamwork and a willingness to learn are far more important.”
The organisers said the next committee would not be starting from scratch, with systems and processes already established to help make the transition smoother.
“Don’t underestimate the difference you can make,” they said.
“It is certainly a commitment, but it’s also one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever be part of.”
