CABONNE residents will begin receiving their new green food organics and garden organics, or FOGO, bins from early 2028, following Government funding to help introduce the new kerbside collection service.
The service is designed to divert food scraps and garden waste from landfill, with a recent waste audit showing almost half of the contents of Cabonne’s red-lid bins could instead be composted.
Cabonne Shire Mayor Cr Kevin Beatty said the change would significantly reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfill.
“At the present moment, figures show about 45 per cent of what goes to landfill is garden organics or food organics, so it will significantly cut our landfill,” he said.
Eligible households that already receive a kerbside garbage collection will receive a green-lid FOGO bin, a kitchen caddy and educational material ahead of the rollout.
The new green bill will accept food scraps including meat, bones and other leftovers, along with garden waste such as grass clippings, leaves and small branches.
Once collected the organic material is processed into compost.
“It goes into a composting chamber where it’s heated to remove contaminants before being further processed into organic compost,” Cr Beatty said.
The introduction of FOGO means weekly red-lid garbage collections will change to fortnightly once the service begins. The recycling service will remain unchanged, while the new green-lid FOGO bin will be collected weekly.
Cr Beatty said residents should use the next two years to become familiar with the new system.
“I’d say go onto Council’s website and be fully informed. If you’ve got any questions, ask Council,” he said.
Planning and community consultation are now underway, with the first bins to be delivered from January 2028 and the full service operating by April.
