DISRUPTED travel plans have led a Canowindra artist to take a different journey, and the result is an upcoming exhibition of her works.
When creative Sue Hodge and her husband’s plans to head to the Middle East became untenable, the pair pivoted and decided to visit friends in South Africa.
While there, Hodge literally drew inspiration – good and bad – from the location, with works produced on the trip forming the core of her new show.
“Spending three-and-a-half weeks in South Africa was overwhelming, amazing and very exciting,” she said.
“I didn’t just want to portray that all was wonderful in South Africa, so there is a watercolour of a beggar going through the rubbish, but on the whole the pieces are of animals and landscapes.
“I’ve also done both large and small, fun and traditional and in a few different mediums.”
Upon her return, Hodge got to work on seeing through her creativity, with the process just as important as the travel.
“It’s been wonderful getting up every morning and reliving some of my experiences, thrills and sights of South Africa in the way of painting,” she said.
“It’s definitely not my normal style but what I’ve tried to capture is the variety of colour, sights, feelings and experiences that we had on our time away.”
The result is an exhibition of almost 30 works that cover a wide range of subjects.
Hodge’s latest show opens at Rosnay Organic Wines, 510 Rivers Road, Canowindra at 6pm on Saturday 1 August.
The works will be on display for more than a month.
