Goat genetics focus for showcase

PRODUCERS wanting to know more about selecting the most desirable genetic traits in goats are being invited to an upcoming event in Condobolin.

Set for mid-September, the Measured Goats Field Day will include information on up-to-date research from the Measured Goats Project, and details on current selection tools available to farmers to pick out the best animals.

Measured Goats Project is a multi-year and wide-ranging goat genetics program run by the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, also known as DPIRD, and backed by Meat and Livestock Australia.

“The project and the annual field day are about delivering improved genetic selection tools and assisting with their uptake in the rapidly growing industry that exported $464 million worth of goatmeat in 2025,” said Dr Tom Granleese, an extensive livestock research officer with DPIRD.

“The field day will offer practical, applicable information to producers, whether they are already using genetic tools or would like to investigate potential production and economic benefits.

“The Measured Goats project has so far amassed more than 260,000 data records from 5421 research-bred progeny and 1329 industry-sourced goats, creating new options and tools to accelerate genetic improvement.

“The results so far have revealed the large amount of genetic variation in Australian goats, and variation is great for making rapid genetic progress, for example, there is a 17-kilogram genetic range between highest and lowest sires for body weight at nine months of age, post-weaning weight.”.

Also on offer at the Measured Goats Field Day will be sessions on breeding, including buck selection and crossbreeding, DNA testing, and dealing with carcass variation.

“The Measured Goats Field Day is a not-to-be-missed event where breeders, commercial producers, researchers, and service providers meet to see the latest results and explore these opportunities to ultimately improve profitability and sustainability across the industry,” said Dr Granleese.

A free event, the Measured Goats Field Day is set for Wednesday 16 September at the Condobolin Agricultural Research and Advisory Station. Register via events.humanitix.com/measured-goats-field-day-2026.

Morning tea and lunch will be provided free, and goat is on the menu!
