Scholarship opens doors for students

TWO new scholarships providing $10,000 annually for up to three years are offering substantial financial support for young people in Canowindra entering vocational training or university.

To assist students from Canowindra, Orange, and Blayney in furthering their education or training, mining company Newmont Cadia has joined forces with the Country Education Foundation (CEF) to offer $60,000 in scholarship support.

The duo of Newmont Cadia-CEF Scholarships will provide $10,000 per year across the 2027, 2028, and 2029 academic years.

The aim is to assist with student expenses, including equipment, textbooks, and accommodation.

Applicants must be between 16 and 25 years old and either live in or have attended school within Canowindra, Orange, or Blayney and preference will be given to a First Nations applicant for one of the two awards.

According to CEF CEO Wendy Mason, the collaboration seeks to ensure where students live doesn’t limit their career goals.

“We know that around 97 per cent of CEF-supported students are considering returning to rural and regional Australia after graduating to utilise their skills in the communities that shaped them,” Ms Mason said.

Director at Newmont Cadia, Nicola Searle, said the company’s commitmed to eliminating educational hurdles for local youth.

“We know there is incredible talent and potential across our region, and we’re proud to support initiatives that help remove barriers to further education and training,” she said.

To access the Newmont Cadia-CEF Scholarships, Canowindra students must first secure a grant through their local Country Education Foundation branch.

Local grant applications are currently open, with a deadline of 31 October.

Further details and application forms are available directly through Country Education Foundation Canowindra.
