Studio invites makers to create everlasting blooms

FLOWERS that never wilt will be taking shape in Molong next month, when Earth and Fire Studio hosts a ceramic flower-making workshop.

The workshop, held on Saturday 10 October, will give participants the opportunity to create their own flowers from clay using hand-building techniques.

Held at Earth and Fire Studio on Gidley Street, the workshop is designed for beginners as well as people with previous experience working with clay.

Materials will be supplied, with participants able to create their own designs during the five-hour session before their finished pieces are fired.

Ceramic artist Jude Keogh said the hands-on nature of pottery was part of what made it so rewarding.

“It’s just sitting around a pottery studio chatting and making stuff,” she said. “It’s good for the soul.”

The workshop will also be one of the final opportunities to attend a session at Earth and Fire Studio’s current Molong premises before Keogh relocates the studio to Orange at the end of the year.

Keogh said leaving Molong would be difficult, but the move would allow her to bring her pottery equipment and kilns together under one roof and make classes more accessible to her largely Orange-based student group.

“As much as it pains me to go, it’s a necessary move for me,” she said.

The move will not mean an end to Keogh’s workshops, with the new home studio set to allow her to continue teaching and working with clay, including wood-firing.

For now, however, the October workshop offers locals a chance to spend a day getting their hands dirty and creating something that will last long after fresh flowers have faded.

The Ceramic Flower Making workshop will be held at 31 Gidley Street in Molong on Saturday 10 October, from 10.30am to 3.30pm.

The workshop costs $190 and is open to beginners and experienced clay workers.
